Already spam signups when the link is only posted on jcow.net

Hey,

I only have the link to my site posted maybe twice on jcow.net and already I have had spam signups which are bypassing the verification.

For example user:

Username: cureimpotence (View profile)
Email: [email protected]
Location: Other

There must be a workaround for the text verification, if users can bypass this and signup so quick without my site being advertised, I can see a lot of spammers signing up once my site is made public.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Hey Al!

Yeah I'm used to spam signups from vbulletin forums I run but didn't think I would get any signups from spam/bots so quick for jcow, the spam prevention must not be working if they can signup so quick, only registered the domain last week :)

BTW, did you ever get your right column width changed?
Still working on that haha

Hi Johnd,
please tell me your Jcow network URL and the spam details. We will provide a corresponding solution of it.
Thanks.

Hey vincent, the url is Http://www.NorthWestSocial.com

An example user is in my first post, I have deleted the posts and users that were spam accounts.

The only place I have posted the domain was here, so the bots are finding the script / site very quick and bypassing captcha

Thanks vincent!

I must say I've already had a few of these passing my community too.

Would it be an idea to add an IP-blocking system to the next version of Jcow?

Yours faithfully,
Mike

Hi,

Certain image captcha systems are no longer secure when it comes to bots.
Sophisticated bots or botnets, use either:
OCR -> to read out the text from pictures
Human captcha solvers -> There are companies employing low cost workers. They solve 1000 captchas for less than $1

Even re-captcha can be cracked with a success rate of about 23%

While captchas can be distorted even more, this will only lead to human users getting frustrated, leaving your site for good.

There are ways to get rid of a very high amount of this automated spam.

More info on this, once approved...

Best Regards
Oliver
