I know this probably sounds like a n00b post, however, I find that I am in need of changing the theme to meet my needs without upgrading to the premium package, is there anyway to do this?

Yeah of course its possible to change theme to your needs with the free version ...

A good start would be to study your themes files page.tpl.php and the css...

Page.tpl.php + page.css in (jcow folder/themes/(Your theme)dashboard.module in (jcow folder/modules/dashboard) were the two main files I have been editing so you might want to look at those :)
